This new residence was conceived as a vacation home for a California couple. The home sits on the cliffs of Portugal overlooking the Mediterranean. It’s a combination of European modern aesthetic and typical local architecture. It is a modern interpretation of the white neighborhood buildings.

The prime directive was to take advantage of the amazing and panoramic coastal and ocean views.

An endless swimming pool was fit into the cliffs below. The unrestricted views provide an ideal swimming environment, while the rocky cliffs maintain privacy. The use of local terra cotta tiles inside and outside the house added a feeling of warmth and consistency.

Continuous clerestory windows allow privacy from the street and effectively capture the soft natural light into the second story. The light is a welcome contrast to the sunny ocean views.

The program for the home included the capability of being locked up when the homeowners are away for the season and to be protected from coastal storms. The use of conventional and local construction materials was also desirable.
